I decided to turn my 12"x12"x12" box into an overgrown steampunk alleyway. It seemed to fit given the randomiser told me my band was Mangled Metalwork, the album was Caffeine for Kicks, they were a boyband and did hiphop music.
I used plywood as the base so it was stronger, and made the walls from cardboard and polystyrene so that I could carve into it and have open gaps in the sides. I covered everything in a thin layer of clay and scored bricks into it, then made a metal pipe by wrapping clay round a loo roll tube and spray painting it silver. I bought some metal cogs, wooden laser cut flower shapes and some little round wooden discs and sprayed them all silver too so I would have lots of options for cogs and switches and other things you might see in a steampunk alleyway. I used quality street wrappers on the windows, and fake grass and gravel and sand made for miniatures to add texture like grass and moss. I used paper flowers attached to twine and wire twisted together and painted green to look like vines, I added a slot in the back so I could add fairy lights behind one of the windows, and then twirled more wire together and shredded the ends to look like a snapped cable trailing down the wall. I also wrapped wire around a pencil then flattened it to add curly wires across the alleyway for more atmosphere and detail.

For the text on the album cover I added it digitally. I wasnt certain on how to add it physically but once i played around with different digital texts I realised I really liked the idea of having "Caffeine for Kicks" spray painted on the floor in the dirt.
It took me a while to really find a way to write Mangled Metalwork, but in the end I wanted to try writing it in thick twisted strands of wire strung across the alleyway where the other curly wires already are. I never did finish it and add the words where I wanted to, but I might do it over summer just to scratch the itch. Overall I'm really proud of this, I stayed up for two straight days just because of how excited I was to keep working on it I didn't want to sleep, it felt really creatively freeing and I'm kicking myself that I didn't finish it. It has such a huge potential and I just didn't hit the mark. |
