artists/games/films

Brian froud

Froud has always been a huge influence on me. His work on the The Labyrinth, and The Dark Crystal in particular shaped my childhood, his ability to create entire worlds, and then working with people such as Jim Henson to create them in real life, is something I have always found to be breathtaking. Nothing in my mind will ever compare to the first time I got my hands on images from his sketchbooks. I poured over them, and took them deep into my soul. His work will always leave me on baited breath, in complete awe.

luke chueh

Maybe its the chronic depression, but his work always feels so uneasy in such a bizzarely comforting way to me. I don't know if his bears are meant to be relatable, but sometimes I look at them and just think "yea I feel you there buddy".

Ghibli

Who hasn't felt inspired by Ghibli films? I don't think I need to say anything else.

Bethesda Games Studio (elder scrolls)

The Elder Scrolls is a series of games created by Bethesda Games Studio. The latest singleplayer release was TES:V Skyrim, on 11/11/2011. To this day, still one of the most iconic game releases, known by basically anyone whos had the misfortune to listen to a video game nerd talk for more than 20 minutes.

I absolutely fell in love when I played it for the first time. The visuals are immense, the worldbuilding is beyond anything else released at the time, and the insane detail in the different cultures, the architecture, the symbols and designs crafted around each group of people in the game, from races to factions, different towns, cities, different planes of the universe, countries and even continents, it blows my mind.

team cherry (hollow knight)

Team Cherry consists of three crazy Australians who created a whole ass game on their own. From scratch. Art, music, sprites, literally all of it, just from a single Kickstarter campaign. It quickly became a game that stands the test of time, and has a truly dedicated fan base who are foaming at the mouth waiting on the games sequel, Silksong.

This game is gorgeous, I cannot put into words how beautiful it is. It is a game designed to get lost in and just enjoy exploring this massive world, you will get whiplash from how fast the game goes from "oh shit fuck this is really hard what is going on" to "I will never emotionally be the same after what I have just experienced". I am very much inspired by the visual style of the game, and it really hit home to me that gorgeous visuals, and amazing characters can be created with "simple" designs with bold lines, it doesn't have to look like it was painted by a goddess in order to be ethereal.
